Beyonce’s father, Mathew Knowles, Shares his Breast Cancer Discovery and Urges Men to Get Tested (video)
Matthew Knowles, the father of Beyonce, revealed the story of his discovery of having breast cancer.
Mr. Knowles noticed red dots on the white t-shirts his wife bought for him. Initially, he thought it was an issue with the t-shirts, as the red dots were consistently in the same spot on all of them.
He then questioned his wife, Gena Avery, about the “black dots of blood” on his t-shirt. She also observed those black dots of blood on his side of their bed sheets.
Matthew recalled that blood discharge is a sign of breast cancer in men, so he promptly contacted his physician and requested a mammogram.
The following day, he underwent a mammogram and then a biopsy, which revealed his breast cancer diagnosis.
“And then a few days later, I had surgery and I had a mastectomy,” he recollected.
Prior to the surgery, his surgeon informed him of an additional test. The results indicated that he was “BRCA2 mutated.”
Mutations in the BRCA2 gene are linked to an increased risk of breast cancer in both men and women, along with other types of cancer, according to MedlinePlus.
Breast cancer claimed the lives of Mathew Knowles’ mother, aunt, and great aunt, highlighting the impact of the disease on his family.
Knowles urged men to undergo testing, emphasizing their susceptibility to breast cancer.
Mathew Knowles has overcome cancer and is now cancer-free.
