Robert Gagnon Obituary, Death – Robert John Gagnon, a beloved figure in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, unexpectedly passed away on November 13, 2023, at the age of 65. Born on June 23, 1958, to James and Monica Gagnon, Rob’s life was marked by remarkable achievements both on and off the football field. Rob’s athletic prowess was evident early on, earning him the title of Wisconsin Player of the Year for football in 1976 during his time at Regis High School.
His talents carried him to the University of Notre Dame, where he played as the starting offensive guard from 1980 to 1981, contributing to the Fighting Irish’s National Championship win in his freshman year. Despite a knee injury in the 1980 game against Michigan, Rob continued to showcase his dedication to the sport. Beyond his athletic career, Rob worked for the City of Los Angeles Department of Revenue until his retirement in 2014. An entrepreneur at heart, he spent his life advocating for health and wellness.
In 2016, Rob found love with Jill Thornton, and they celebrated their marriage on May 13, 2023, at the Back of the Moon Campground in Chetek, a place dear to their hearts. Rob’s life was rich with diverse interests. Fishing, boating, time with family and friends, hunting, and attending concerts were among his favorite pastimes. His warm personality and zest for life left an indelible mark on those around him.
He is survived by his wife Jill, daughter McKenzie (Trey) Boettcher, grandchild Shaye Boettcher, mother Monica, siblings James, Mary Ellen, Paul, Peter, Michael, and Patrick, as well as his in-laws Bryce (Jeanine) Cheatham Jr. and Jeff (Mylinda) Cheatham. Rob’s extended family includes surrogate kids Moe and Curly, along with numerous relatives and friends who will miss him dearly. Preceded in death by his father James, brother David, niece Traci Gagnon, and nephew Jesse Gagnon, Rob’s passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish on November 28, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Francis Thadathil officiating. Visitation will be at Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel on November 27, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on the day of the mass at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the start of the service. The final resting place will be Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire.
