He was best known as Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott in the TV and film franchise “Star Trek”. He is also known for creating the Klingon and Vulcan languages. His career spanned from 1952 to 2005.

James was the youngest child of Sarah Frances and William Patrick Doohan. He and his family left Vancouver and settled in Sarnia, Ontario, where he excelled in mathematics and science at Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School. He enlisted in the 102nd Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps in 1938 and served in the Royal Canadian Artillery during the Second World War, enduring multiple gunshot wounds. He also obtained a military pilot’s license.

After the war, he settled in London, Ontario, intending to study technology and engineering. However, he discovered a drama school in Toronto and decided to pursue acting after being unimpressed by the actors he heard on a radio drama. He won a two-year scholarship to the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City and started his career at CBC radio in 1946. His on-screen career began in the mid- ‘50s, but he achieved major success in the TV series “Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans” in 1957.

He cemented his place in popular culture with his role as Chief Engineer of the USS Enterprise, Montgomery Scott, in the TV series “Star Trek”. His portrayal gained immense popularity in reruns, and he continued to reprise the role in the film franchise and various related TV series, conventions, and events, ultimately shaping his public identity and career. His later roles included Damon Warwick in the soap opera “The Bold and the Beautiful” (1996-1997).

James Doohan was an inspiration to many engineering students, which led to him receiving an honorary engineering degree from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Throughout his personal life, James was known to be married three times. At the time of his death, he was married to Wende Braunberger. He struggled with severe health problems in his later years and passed away on the 20th July 2005 in Redmond, Washington.
