Inferiority complex causing Nigerians to over depend on foreign goods – ASUU President

The President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, has emphasized that many Nigerians are excessively reliant on foreign products due to an inferiority complex. He stated that for a country to make economic progress, it must utilize its own ideas and harness the capabilities of its citizens, particularly those within the university system. Osodeke expressed his concerns during an event in Abuja, where he also criticized the tendency of Nigerians to favor foreign goods and services over local alternatives.

Furthermore, Osodeke raised issues regarding the national budget and the inclusion of TETFund’s budget within it. He stressed the need for Nigeria to leverage the expertise of its own people and encouraged the utilization of homegrown ideas to address the country’s challenges. He also cautioned against political interference in TETFund from ministry authorities.

In addition, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, highlighted the importance of supporting university researchers in bringing their innovative ideas to fruition. He emphasized the significance of Nigeria transitioning to a knowledge-based economy, citing the global shift from a resource-rich economy to a knowledge-based one. Echono reiterated TETFund’s commitment to investing in research, innovation, and development as a vital strategy for sustainable growth.
