Duped by social media vendors, patrons lament losses, growing mistrust
Exploring the spread of fake online vendors who deceive customers either by not delivering paid products or supplying substandard items
Chiamaka Nwankwo, a 27-year-old from Owerri, Imo State, shared her experience after falling victim to an online vendor based in South Africa. Despite initial caution, she eventually purchased clothing items in bulk but ended up losing over N600,000 with nothing to show for it.
Reflecting on her ordeal, Nwankwo disclosed her frustration in tracking down the elusive vendor who scammed her, expressing her inability to retrieve any information to aid authorities in pursuing legal action.
Another Vendor’s Deceit
Bolanle Adepoju, an online vendor herself, recounted being deceived by a lady posing as a social media vendor, causing her significant distress. Adepoju highlighted the intricacies of the fraud, detailing how the vendor fabricated swift delivery promises and utilized various tactics to exploit her trust.
In a similar incident, a Lagos-based engineer, identified as Charles, fell victim to a scam involving the purchase of a smartphone from an Instagram user, resulting in a substantial financial loss.
Instances of Deception
Keji Ojelade, a firm manager, shared her experience of receiving inferior wigs from an Instagram vendor, emphasizing the need for vigilance in online transactions to avoid such deceit.
While legitimate online traders seek to expand their reach and streamline transactions, scammers take advantage of the anonymity of the internet to defraud unsuspecting individuals, contributing to a climate of distrust and skepticism.
Erosion of Trust in Online Shopping
Henry Owolabi, the Country Manager for DPO Pay, highlighted the detrimental impact of fraud on the e-commerce sector, citing heightened apprehension among merchants and consumers, leading to a preference for pay-on-delivery options over online payments.
Caution Against Deceptive Vendors
Emphasizing the need for thorough background checks, online vendor Omonigho Omoniacc urged potential customers to exercise caution before engaging in transactions. Digital marketer Collins Omozemoje echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the prevalence of fake online vendors and the importance of scrutinizing reviews and vendor details to mitigate risks.
