Gawem DeAngelo Wells, better known as Bonzi Wells, was born on September 28, 1976, in Muncie, Indiana. He is a retired professional basketball player who had a successful 11-season career in the NBA, playing for various teams including the Portland Trailblazers, Memphis Grizzlies, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and New Orleans Hornets. He later played in China for the Shanxi Zhongyu and in Puerto Rico with the Capitanes de Arecibo before retiring.

He achieved great success in college, setting all-time career records in points (2,485) and steals (347) in the Mid-American Conference. His outstanding performance earned him several accolades, including MAC Player of the Year in 1996 and 1998, and three consecutive First-team All-MAC honors from 1996 to 1998.
Following his college career, Wells was selected as the 11th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons in the 1998 NBA Draft but was later traded to the Portland Trailblazers.
Wells had his best season in Portland during 2001-2002, averaging 17.0 points per game, along with 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He also set a record for the most points scored by a Portland Trailblazers player in the postseason, with 45 points in a match against the Dallas Mavericks.
After facing legal troubles, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies. He later played for the Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and New Orleans Hornets before venturing into international basketball.
