Subsequently, he was selected by the Kentucky Colonels in the 1971 ABA draft and also by the Chicago Bulls in the 1971 NBA draft.
Opting to join the Kentucky Colonels, he received a record-high contract, which significantly augmented his net worth. Artis immediately displayed his dominance at the start of his professional career, winning the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards in his debut season, a remarkable feat. Over the next five years, he led the league in rebounds and topped two seasons in field goal percentage and blocks. Following the ABA’s merger with the NBA in 1976, and subsequent disbandment of several teams, including the Kentucky Colonels, Artis was picked as the first overall draft pick by the Bulls. He continued to perform consistently for Chicago, securing four All-Star selections before being traded to the San Antonio Spurs. He went on to earn two more All-Star distinctions before returning to the Bulls in 1988, capping off his career with the Boston Celtics. At the time of his retirement, he held the NBA record for field goal percentage at 59.9%. Additionally, he played a season with the Italian league team Arimo Bologna, making it to the European All-Star team.
Following his retirement, Artis returned to Jacksonville, taking on the role of Special Assistant to the President at his alma mater in 2007. He also provided color commentary at the school’s flagship station WJXL. In 2011, he was elected into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, and in the following year, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
