Calhoun’s journey in basketball began with a scholarship from the American International College in Springfield. He played there until 1968 when he completed his bachelor’s degree in sociology. Post-graduation, he ventured into coaching, starting at Lyme-Old Lyme High School in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and then moving on to Dedham High School. In 1972, Northeastern University recruited him as their new head coach, where he successfully transitioned the team from Division II to Division I in 1979. Calhoun’s tenure at Northeastern continued until 1986, during which time he unearthed several exceptional players, including Reggie Lewis, who went on to become the top pick in the 1987 NBA Draft and later joined the Boston Celtics.
